Dr Colin Priestland has been involved in oral surgery for over 30 years and implant dentistry for 20 years. Over that time, he has benefited from working with some highly experienced surgeons, prosthodontists and researchers who have been his mentors. Colin continues to participate in national and international meetings and courses in order to stay at the cutting edge of progress and clinical care in the areas of implantology, soft tissue surgery and the reconstruction of bone in the jaws, along with lecturing at Universities and specialist meetings around the globe.
Colin is a senior lecturer at the James Cook University Dental School where he now lectures to postgraduate students studying for the diploma in implantology in a number of areas including implant treatment, bone augmentation, grafting of the maxillary sinuses (often called sinus lifts) and the treatment of implants suffering from peri-implant infection or inflammation. He is also a co-author of a chapter on implants and periodontal disease in a new textbook published by Elsevier, entitled Practical Periodontics edited by Kenneth Eaton and Philip Ower.
The use of a reliable implant system is fundamental to the success of this type of therapy. However, nowadays, many different implant systems are available from many different countries and they vary considerably in a number of different ways. Some are manufactured from Type-4 pure commercial grade Titanium while others are Titanium alloy or ceramic implants. Some have relatively smooth surfaces while others have rough surfaces, and of course, implants vary in diameter and length.
At NQ Surgical Dentistry, Colin prefers to use Neoss implants for several reasons. They are manufactured from pure type-4 commercial grade Titanium and have a hydrophilic surface, which attracts blood and cells onto the Titanium which promotes an early integration with the bone.

All the most modern equipment and techniques are used to achieve consistent high standards of planning and surgery, allowing for a reliable clinical outcome. Used in conjunction with cone beam volumetric tomography, also known as cone beam CT scans, planning is carried out using 3D software allowing for the optimal choice of implant for each site and to facilitate perfect implant placement offering simplified restoration leading to ideal tooth positioning. Such detailed planning allows Dr Priestland to know precisely what is required before surgery begins.
If a surgical site has a shortage of bone to support an implant, then this can be anticipated prior to surgery and a detailed plan can be made to graft the site. Augmentation of the bone defect is performed using a range of bone grafting and collagen products researched and manufactured by Geistlich Australia.
