This Is An Area Of Dentistry That Is Concerned With Oral Health; The Diagnosis And Management Of Disease In Your Mouth.

While some oral diseases present with obvious signs and symptoms such as bleeding gums, bad breath, swelling of tissues or discomfort, others do not. Other conditions may present with no symptoms what-so-ever; some of these conditions may be an indication of an underlying general medical conditions.

Examples Of Oral Diseases Are:

  • Periodontal disease (gum disease)
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Soft tissue lesions

Mouth Ulcers Can Look Like Blisters On The Soft Tissues In The Mouth

Mouth ulcers are small lesions that may develop in your cheeks, inside the lips, on the tongue, palate or in the floor of the mouth. Any ulcer that does not heal within three weeks should be checked by your dentist or trained oral health professional. Mouth ulcers may result from a number of causes which include:

  • Bacterial, viral or fungal infections
  • In connection with diseases of the gut (such as Coeliac disease)
  • Sensitivities to acidic foods
  • Trigger foods such as chocolate and coffee
  • Minor injury to mouth from hard brushing or sports injury
  • Connective tissue disorders
  • Auto-immune disease
  • More sinister lesions that should be checked for the presence of cancerous cells
