Bone Grafts Townsville QLD
Bone Grafting maybe required if you have lost bone structure due to infection?
Bone grafting is a surgical procedure to restore the health and structure of your jaw. Here are some reasons why bone may be missing in the jaws include:
- Developmental deformity
- Previous dental procedures including extractions or surgery
- Infection resulting in bone defects
- Lesions including cysts, abscesses and other pathological lesions such as tumors
- While bone may be lost at the time of tooth extraction due to the surgical procedure, it may also be lost in the months following tooth removal, a process known as bone resorption.
What do bone grafts involve?
Bone grafts involve the use of a grafting material which may either be patient-derived, animal derived or synthetic. Such materials assist the body in regenerating bone where it has been destroyed. Such grafts are often required around dental implants when they are placed in the jaw after the bone loss has taken place previously.
After surgery, you will receive antibiotics and analgesics. You should limit your dietary intake to soft mushy food for the first week after surgery. A bone graft is normally left for 4 to 6 months to mature and achieve greater strength before such bone can be used to support implants to help improve your smile.

All surgery carries inherent risks and complications and it is especially important that you understand and accept these risks prior to proceeding. This may include seeking a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
